In 2002, the Department of Clinical Geriatrics was established, then transformed into the Geriatrics Clinic. In 2021, the name of the Unit was adapted to the teaching activities carried out by employees, i.e. those aimed mainly at nursing students. Thus, the name of the Unit was changed to the Department of Geriatric Nursing. The department is located on the premises of the University Clinical Center in the location of the Infant Jesus Hospital, at 4 Oczki street in Warsaw.

 

From 2002, the head of the newly created Unit in the structures of the Faculty of Health Sciences was Prof Krzysztof Galus, MD. Since 2015, the function of acting.  The head of the Department was performed by Katarzyna Broczek, MD, PhD, who was replaced in 2021 Łukasz Czyżewski, PhD.

 

Łukasz Czyżewski, PhD, specializes in anaesthesiology and intensive care nursing, nephrology nursing, and is currently specializing in geriatric nursing. He is also a provincial consultant in the field of nursing. So far, the lecturer has been employed in the Department of Nephrological Nursing in Medical University of Warsaw.

 

In the Department, since 2006 she has been employed as Assistant Professor of Elżbieta Kozak-Szkopek, MD, PhD, specialist in internal diseases and geriatrics, provincial consultant in the field of geriatrics.

 

In the history of its activity, the Department cooperated with the international Institute of Molecular and Cell Biology in Warsaw and the Institute of Experimental Biology. M. Nencki Polish Academy of Science in Warsaw in the implementation of the following research programs conducted by these institutes:

1. Genetic and environmental factors of longevity of Polish centenarians.

2. International program: "Genetics of Healthy Aging".

3. Polsenior - medical, psychological, sociological and economic aspects of aging in Poland.

 

In 2017-2020, the Clinic implemented the IONIS (Indoor and Outdoor NITICSplus Solution for Dementia Challenges). Project as part of the AAL (Active and Assisted Living Program) financial program by the National Center for Research and Development (NCBR).
